The Tucson Jazz Music Foundation will once again sponsor a tuition-free ‘girls only’ jazz music intensive, but this time we are adding vocals and dancing to gain appreciation for all the ways we can express ourselves with jazz music. We thank our generous donors for making this program possible. Many continue to donate in loving memory of Yvonne Ervin who worked tirelessly on behalf of jazz artists in Tucson, but also on behalf of our youth and girls/women.
Monday-Thursday Mornings, 9-noon pm, at the Tucson Jazz Institute housed within Utterback Middle School, Tucson (I10 Kino North near Tucson Marketplace Shopping Center).

GIRLS JAZZIN’ IT UP PERFORMING ARTS INTENSIVE | Brief Descriptions
Most jazz band clinicians recommend ‘singing’ to enhance and improve playing. In addition to learning to sing ‘jazz’ songs, using microphones, and performing in front of a band, guest co-director Sarah Tolar will introduce students to female jazz singing legends Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Anita O’Day, Doris Day, Peggy Lee, and so many more.
Learn how to play jazz! Guest co-director Mary Petrich will teach two levels of jazz band:
Level I: Beginners with minimal instrument proficiency through Low Intermediate (Mondays & Wednesdays)
Level II: High Intermediate through Advanced (audition clip requested) (Tuesdays & Thursdays)
Learn to play and improvise over the blues >> engage in call and response >> develop rhythmic ability in soloing >> play together and express individuality in a group setting >> learn songs by ear >> play improvised duets >> listen together >> do all of this in a supported, positive environment.
Required: Ability to stay focused for the duration of each session, work on assignments, and practice assigned music. To register, click on the link at the top. Because the Intensive is limited in size, applicants will be selected based on their ability and desire to learn and play jazz. Registration Fee: To defray some of the cost of the program (custom t-shirt, supplies, and video project production, a fee of $40 is being charged. Payment will be due upon acceptance into the program via PayPal or check.
PERFORMANCE: Participants will perform in a concert. Details TBA, but target dates being considered are June 22-23.
2019 Girls Jazzin’ It Up Intensive was a success! Below is a photo of the group after their performance. Not everyone was able to perform, but they were there in ‘spirit.’
Heading up the 2019 GIRLS JAZZIN’ IT UP was Phoenix performing jazz saxophonist, composer, recording artist, clinician and group leader MARY PETRICH.
